Sri Achaladeepeswarar Temple
Sri Achaladeepeswarar Temple is Mohanur's most renowned ancient Shaivite shrine, celebrated in devotional history as a Thevaram Vaippu Sthalam mentioned by Saint Appar. The temple derives its sacred name from the Sanskrit term Achala ("unmoving" or "motionless") and Deepa ("flame"), honoring the miraculous Ananya Vilakku—a perpetual sacred ghee lamp placed in the sanctum sanctorum that remains completely steady without flickering in the breeze.
In this temple, the presiding deity Lord Shiva is west-facing, while his consort Goddess Mukthambigai (also worshipped as Madhukaraveni) faces east. The idol of the Goddess is uniquely sculptured out of a single monolithic stone. The temple also features stone carvings commemorating Sage Beejavaba Maharishi, who according to tradition dutifully tended the sacred eternal flame.
Major Festivals: Maha Shivaratri, Karthigai Deepam (Akhanda Deepam celebration), Pradosham, Arudra Darisanam, and Panguni Uthiram.
