Sri Navaladi Karuppannaswami

  • Arulmigu Navaladi Karuppannaswami Temple – Mohanur is a 500-1000 year-old temple in Mohanur, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • Its presiding deity is Karuppu Sami, also known as Navaladian and Judge Durai and known as Pattamarathan.
  • Its reputation is Swayambu known for two trees, the “Holy tree” known as Naval tree and the “Special tree”, known as Neem Tree.
  • King Mohur Pazhayan ruled Mohanur and prayed to Navaladian before making decisions. He declared the nearby Neem Tree as the Watch Tree of the region. After the invasion of Senguttuvan, the Naval tree became dry. As the deity was near this tree, he called Pattamarathaian. As he was also near the Naval tree, the deity was also known as Navaladian.
  • In other temples, the prayers are made by the devotees in various forms. Here they are submitted in writing to the Lord and tie them on the Naval tree. Once their prayers are fulfilled, they make offerings in different ways.
  • Most of the offerings are in the form of sacrifice of birds and animals. In some cases, foot wear is offered and this is done in a nearby peepal tree.
  • In the court yard of the temple, there are three spears ( Vels ) and two horses. Those who have knowingly committed any wrongs, would pierce lemons on these spears and pledge that they would not repeat it.
  • The horses are believed to be the witnesses. The vels are called Sakthi Vel or Sathya Vel.
  • The Swayambu Murthy is in a pit in the temple. There is a dry tree behind the swayambu called Pattamaram, meaning that the tree is dry. The Chera King Senguttuvan performed the field puja here before invading to the north. The Chellandiamman shrine is very popular. The pujas performed here are non-vegetarian.
  • After a while, the Navaladiyan Temple along with Mariyamman and Kaaliamman temple is mean to be consecrated after finishing the Construction of New RajaGopuram in Navaladiyan temple which is very high.
  • Kumbabisekam is planned on 17-06-2018. The Festival will be for three days from 15 June to 17 June. On the Final Day of the Festival Major VIP’s were invited for the Function.
  • During the Panguni month (March–April) Mariamman festival is celebrated for 10 days. The Kaliamman festival follows then in Chithirai (April–May), lasting 8 Days.

Shri Madhukaraveni

  • This Shiva temple is over 1000 years old. Here the Swamy is Swayambu. As per legend, originally there was only a Shiva shrine here. There was a curd seller called Kumarayee who was a devout Shiva devotee. Every day, after selling the curd, she used to offer the remaining as Neiyvedya to the Lord and then consume it. After some time, she delivered a male boy. The people of the village suspected her chastity.
  • She responded saying that the Lord knows about her purity. The next day, when she took bath in Cauvery, she disappeared and Ambikai appeared there and gave darshan to the villagers and revealed that it was She who came as Kumarayee.
  • Thereafter, a separate shrine adjoining the Lord’s abode, was constructed and as the husband of Kumarayee, He was called Kumareeswarar. In view of this, in this temple though the Lord and the Mother face West and East respectively, their shrines are right next to each other.
  • Another legend connects this place with the Mango episode in Murugan lore. When Murugan left Kailash, Parvathi was chasing Him to take Him back to Kailash.
  • Hearing His Mother’s calling, Murugan stopped at a small hillock in this place. As Ambikai called her son ( Mahan in Tamil ), this place came to be called Mahanur which later became Mohanur. Since Ambikai was full of her Motherly Love, milk started flowing from Her and hence She came to be called Madhukaraveni ( Madhu also means milk).
  • Special prayers are offered to her on Aadi 18th day ( Aadiperukku ). Mother’s murthy including the frame ( thiruvatchi ) is made of single stone.

Shri Padmavathi Sametha Shri Kalyana Prasanna Venkataramanar

  • There are very few Perumal temples having Vilvam as Sthala Vruksham. This is one among them. There are several other unique features in this temple. For instance, below the Vanni tree, there are shrines for Vinayaka- yes, Vinayaka in a Perumal Temple- and Anjaneya. The belief is that for anything to be successful, one should start from Vinayaka and end with Anjaneya and hence both shrines are provided here. There is also a separate Anjaneya shrine opposite the temple.
  • As per legend, a devotee of Balaji was visiting Tirupathi regularly. After he suffered a paralytic attack, he could not visit his favourite God. He somehow managed to come near Cauvery and decided to end his life. Suddenly he saw a snake coming out of a nearby ant hill and after some time, disappeared.
  • The sighting of snake somehow made him to abandon his suicide decision. That night, the Lord appeared before him and advised him to search in the ant hill. When he started digging the ant hill, he found the Murthy of Balaji.
  • He installed the Lord along with Sridevi and Bhoodevi in the wedding form and also constructed a separate shrine for Padmavathi. (Please also see my write up on Ariyakudi Thiruvenkadam Udayan temple where a similar legend is prevalent )
  • As the devotee was given the Tirupathi darshan here, the Sunday during Navarathri in the Tamil month of Puratasi ( Sep-Oct) is celebrated as Tirupathi Day in this temple.
  • On that day, all the poojas and rituals are conducted in strict conformity of Tirupathi traditions. Generally, in Perumal temples, Lakshmi used to be present in the chest of the Utsava Murthy; here we find a triangle with Lakshmi Rekha on the chest of the Utsava Murthy.
